Hi Orietta

A couple of activities in the design phase right now.

I just completed managing a USAID project in Jamaica (see www.usaid-comet.org) and a Caribbean regional juvenile justice project for the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, and am now back in Haiti. We're currently at the very beginning phase of starting up a new agriculture program with the University of Florida that will work with Haitian farmers groups, the Ministry of Agriculture, and small rural entrepreneurs to improve food production (especially increase animal protein). The lab research component of the program is in Gainesville and the field adaptation and extension part of it will be based in La Plaine du Cul de Sac. So we are doing a fair amount of shuttling between Haiti and Miami. Your blog has gotten me curious about mung beans. Will do some online research on mung beans. Is your activity located in Haiti? Regards- Bert

Hello Orieta from Australia! I'm from Florida but was born in La Source, Cots de Fer, haiti. I left when I was really young but my family always travel back every year. And every year we go the place becomes more deserted as the young ones emigrate to other countries and never return and the elders just can't keep up with keeping the town together and with the lack of knowlege and education, the trees are being cut, destroyed, whether for charcoal sale or cooking. People in haiti doesnt realize the true value that trees have but recognize only the monetary value instead. Haiti is in great need of reforestation projects and education about the consequences of them destroying trees. People of Cotes de Fer and other town are slowing starting to become aware of the longterm effect of cutting them trees but yet has an obligation to feed their family and have access to other options. Some people that's all they fo for a living is making charcoal to sell. How do address the issue of them possibly putting a stop to it. Unless other options are presented for these charcoal merchants to still make a living, they will not be receptive to our efforts.  I'm now trying to start some animal breeding and animal husbandry programs to help some get into the habit of raising animals to resell instead of cutting trees to make charcoal. But my biggest challenge right is initial investment. It cost nothing to make charcoal except for the physical labor n a match light. Animal breeding means an initial investment to start and must don't have the funds.

Anyways, some of us have great ideas and are really working to help our towns but there's so many barriers and obstacles that it get so difficult and eventual a burden to yourself. Having the intention to help and having the means and knowledge is a different thing in itself. I'm open to ideas that you may have to help. I would be happy to assist in your projects and ideas too. Just stay in touch n keep me posted as how I can of assistance. Take care and god bless!

Hi Myrione, and what a great soul you have. I totally agree with everything you feel that is just the phylosophy we all hold. And yes people are becoming aware, therefore education remains vital. Yes, there are infinite obstacles, but it is a fight I will never give up. It is selfish, really, it makes me feel that perhaps I will leave a small corner of this world a litlle bit better. Your views are confirm me that the fight is worth it, as it is your generation that will continue on. Cote de fer is magnificent, and so is the island of La Gonave, for whose people I work. Mike is doing a tremendous work and we must all support him as best as we can, for it is his job that might very well improve something in Haiti and for all those who want to listen. I would like to keep chatting with you, if you please, but we would take too much space in this forum that is for other reasons. I am on FaceBook and Skype. For now, let's keep the good work going as we best can.
